As Jesus walked to the Garden of Gethsemane, John made this interesting observation, “Jesus often met there with His disciples.” (John 18:2)
This small group of twelve disciples was the centerpiece of the people-building ministry of Jesus.
From the birth of the New Testament church and throughout the ages, the small group has been the key to personal spiritual vitality and the renewal of the church.
What is a small group?
It is a band of seven to twelve people (though it could be as few as two or three) who gather together each week for a time of Bible study, a time of sharing both joys and concerns, and a time of praying for one another.
I am convinced small group fellowship is essential for spiritual growth.
Although growth can be inspired by many means, significant spritual growth will occur in the life of an adult that is in a small group.
The implication is obvious. Join a small group – or start one.
Prayerfully choose seven to twelve people. Ask them to join you for a six-week study. Choose an easy book of the Bible to study, such as Philippians. After six weeks, see who would like to continue.
Ours is an over-busy age. Most of us are doing good things, but we are attempting too much! Make events like the small group, which are essential to spiritual growth, the real and practiced priorities for your schedule.
“Therefore encourage one another, and build up one another, just as you also are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
In Jesus’ name,
Pastor Craig
